Hi Sam!

Learning it isn't just easy, but it's ridiculously fun. I strongly encourage you to give it a go. Ruby, as a language, is fun to write in, and a lot of things that you struggle to get working in Delphi work out of the box in Rails. As far as hardware requirements, development has a very low barrier to entry, whatever computer you're already using will be fine. For deployment, well, that's going to depend a lot on the app and how much traffic it gets. There are a lot of great hosts for Rails apps, including the remarkable Heroku and the cheap-and-easy DreamHost, which will get you started. You can always move to something dedicated later on.

Hi..
By coincindence, looking for some rails info i was reading your posts in your blog.
I'm a software developer, currently developing in Delphi (old versions 6) didn't have the courage to move to the newer versions: if it works don't fix it.. kinda of :)
I also did some developments using PHP via D4PHP (i like it but the result wasn't what i expected).

ANyway, i will like to know your opinion about rails, how fast could an Delphi all time developer learn it, is it worth it?, hardware requirements, etc.

Thx a lot.

I've not, and to be honest, I don't have any interest in writing or reviewing non-Ruby tools on this blog. The idea of compiling Pascal or Basic into JavaScript is an interesting one, and something Rails does already with its ERB templates (which let you write Ruby code and it generates JavaScript for you).

Hi Tim,
I seem to have asked the following but somehow I couldn't find it anymore today, trying again now:

Do you know morfik? If not, I think it worths some research, its concept is very similar to Delphi and its language is pascal, and you can choose to compile the projects with Delphi for windows or FPC for Linux, if yes, what do you think of it compared with ruby on rails? Thanks.

Hi Edwin,

I won't be doing step-by-step tutorials. I'm more interested in providing information about the things I had trouble with while learning Ruby and Rails. Step-by-step is nice when you have a specific problem to solve, but background and comparisons are better when you're trying to learn a more generic "how does this work?"
